One — The White House is touting over one-thousand arrests since deploying Guard troops across the nation's capital earlier this month.  According to the White House, 111 firearms have been seized, six known gang members have been arrested, and 49 homeless encampments have been cleared by the multi-agency teams.  At this time, it is unclear when the federal police presence will be scaled back in the district.

 

Two ---   Gas prices are expected to remain low for Labor Day weekend travelers.  AAA says the national average for a gallon of regular should stay below last year's average of three dollars and 33 cents, and should remain low for the rest of the summer as long as Gulf Coast refineries are not hit by hurricanes. 

 
And number three ---   Plus-sized customers will soon have to deal with a new seating policy on Southwest Airlines.  According to the airline, larger passengers who cannot be accommodated in a single plane seat will be required to purchase a second seat ahead of time and can then request a refund after the flight. The changes are part of Southwest's broader shift to assigned seating.

One — The four-year anniversary of the deadly terror attack during the U.S. withdrawal of Afghanistan was marked by President Trump.  He hosted the Gold Star families of the soldiers killed by the suicide attack at the White House.  Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was also on hand, and said an investigation into the Afghanistan pull-out directed by former President Biden continues.

 

Two ---   The Michigan Secretary of State's Office says overseas military personnel and citizens will be able to vote online this fall.  The Electronic Delivery and Return Portal will be available September 15th and was developed with the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.  Previously, people who voted outside of the U.S. had to mail in absentee ballots.

 
And number three ---   Cracker Barrel is responding after uproar over its logo redesign.  The restaurant chain changed its beloved logo to remove Uncle Herschel sitting in a rocking chair, but the company says its "old timer" will still be on its menu, road signs, and inside its country store.  While Cracker Barrel also announced that new dishes are joining the restaurant's staple items, they say customers can still expect the same hard work and scratch-cooked food.

One — Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will announce action today against three states over English language tests for truck drivers.  The move comes after an Indian immigrant truck driver was charged for killing three people in a Florida crash. Transportation chief Sean Duffy says the man could only identify one out of four road signs shown to him in a test after the crash.

 

Two ---   Indiana Republican lawmakers are planning to meet with President Trump at the White House today.  Reports say although Tuesday's event was pre-planned to discuss the President's agenda, the topic of redistricting will no doubt come up.  Indiana may become the next state to re-draw it's congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

 
And number three ---   The Fiscal Year 2026 Michigan state budget still has not been introduced in the legislature and budget talks are scheduled to continue today between the governor and leaders of the state House and Senate.  Governor Gretchen Whitmer wouldn't confirm an economic trip is planned for next month to Japan, but did say she is always available to negotiate the budget regardless of where she is.  Whitmer says missing the September 30 deadline to get the budget done and prevent a government shutdown on October 1 will not do anyone good.
