One — Officials in Davenport, Iowa, are confirming that a body has been found in the apartment building that partially collapsed last weekend.  A city spokesperson identified the victim as Branden Colvin, who is the first confirmed death.  Police say there is a high probability two others were also at home at the time of the collapse.

Two—  A wildfire in Crawford County is roughly 90-percent contained. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the 24-hundred acre fire started Saturday afternoon and was initially over three-thousand acres.  The fire was started by a campfire on private property and threatened 35 homes.

 

 

 

Three -- Senator Joe Manchin isn't saying if he is planning on a third-party presidential run.  Speaking on Fox News Sunday, the West Virginia Democrat did say that people want to be governed from the middle rather than from the far left or far right.  Manchin's name has reportedly come up as a possible choice for a bipartisan political group called No Labels.

One — A Florida businessman says his family was on the crashed plane that caused chaos in Washington, DC.  The plane sparked panic yesterday after it violated restricted airspace and forced the military to scramble F-16's at supersonic speeds.  That caused a sonic boom that led to phone calls to the police and news outlets.  The civilian plane crashed in the Virginia wilderness after repeated attempts by NORAD to establish contact.

Two—   Michigan's average gasoline price is eight-cents lower than last week at three-dollars-53-cents a gallon. Triple-A Michigan says that is ten-cents higher than last month and a dollar-49 less than last year. The most expensive gas is in Jackson and Traverse City at three-57, with Flint's three-48 being the most affordable.

 

Three -- Instagram is reinstating the personal account of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.  The 2024 Democratic presidential candidate account was removed in 2021 for repeatedly posting information about COVID, with Instagram saying his account shared debunked claims about the coronavirus or vaccines. According to Meta, Kennedy's personal account will be restored, but his organization's won't.

One — Ukraine's Ambassador to the U.S. isn't giving an exact timetable, but she does say a counter-offensive against Russia will happen soon.  The ambassador said on CBS's Face the Nation that Ukrainian President Zelensky won't make an official announcement when it occurs.  

Two—   The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says west Michigan is under extreme fire danger due to how dry the weather has been over the last month. There have been 26 days of dry conditions and it is the second-longest stretch in history for the area. West Michigan has received just a tenth of an inch of rain since May 9th.

 

 

Three -- A Republican congressman closely involved in the debt ceiling negotiations says House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's job is absolutely safe.  Speaking on CBS's Face the Nation, Garrett Graves of Louisiana called McCarthy one of the best strategists we've ever had.  Graves said that any call to oust McCarthy from his role as speaker is not a mainstream position within the Republican caucus.

One — The Senate has passed a bill that would suspend the nation's debt ceiling for two years.  Lawmakers voted on the measure Thursday as the deadline to avoid a potential default was just days away.  The vote was 63-to-36, with the bill now heading to President Biden's desk.  Biden said he would be signing the bill into law as soon as possible, and addressing the American people directly on Friday.

Two—  Ford Motor Company executive chairman Bill Ford Jr. says the U.S. is slow to adapt to electric vehicle technology. He says EVs are quickly becoming normal elsewhere in the world. Ford says one reason the U.S. hasn't gotten on board as quickly as Europe is gas prices in this country remain cheaper than most of the rest of the world. 

 

 

 

Three -- The judge tasked with overseeing the feud between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is recusing himself from the case.  Disney is currently suing DeSantis over alleged first amendment violations..  Walker called the move erring on the side of caution and judicial integrity. Some members of his family own Disney stock.

One — President Biden is expected to sign off on a House and Senate approved bill that raises the nation's debt ceiling for the next two years.  This, after the Senate voted 63-36 in favor of the measure on Thursday.  The Fiscal Responsibility Act will raise the debt limit through January 1, 2025, and implement caps on government spending and policy changes.

Two—  Governor Whitmer has formed the Growing Michigan Together Council to investigate why people are leaving the state and come up with a strategy to attract and protect jobs.  She says they will focus on upgrading transportation, improving education, and keeping the state's economic momentum going.  

 

 

 

Three -- Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt will send National Guard troops to the southern border in response to Texas Governor Greg Abbott's call for reinforcements.  Stitt says he believes it's in the best interest of Oklahoma and the nation to take decisive action to address what he calls the federal government's utter failure to secure the southern border.

Two—  The Senate also has approved legislation to block President Biden's student debt relief program.  The Senate passed the measure in a 52-46 vote on Thursday, just days after it cleared the Republican-majority House. Democratic Senators Jon Tester and  Joe Manchin and Independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema joined Republicans in voting to nix the Biden plan.  The president is expected to veto the bill.  

 

 

 

Three -- Teen birthrates are at another record low in the U.S.  The CDC reports teen birthrates dropped three-percent last year.  That's a smaller drop than previous years as teen birthrates have fallen an average of eight-percent each year since 2007.
