—Here are 3 big things you need to know—

 

One — Israel is warning the United Nations to evacuate over a million people in Gaza.  On Thursday, UN officials said the Israeli Ministry of Defense told them to notify Palestinians living in the northern areas of Gaza to evacuate to the southern part of the strip in the next 24 hours.  

Two—   Steve Scalise is withdrawing from the race to become the next Speaker of the House.  He announced at a conference meeting Thursday night he would be pulling out of the race following a day full of meetings with fellow Republicans.  It appeared unlikely he would get the needed 217 members of his own party to vote for him on the floor.

 

Three -- Senator John Fetterman is calling on the full Senate to vote to expel fellow Democrat Bob Menendez from the chamber. The New Jersey lawmaker is facing new charges suggesting he acted as a foreign agent on behalf of Egypt, on top of the bribery allegations he was indicted on with his wife last month.  Pennsylvanian Fetterman said in a statement that Menendez should have been gone long ago.

—Here are 3 big things you need to know—

 

One — The Biden administration is being asked to freeze six-billion dollars in Iranian assets during Israel's war with Hamas.  The funds were unfrozen last month as part of a prisoner exchange with Iran.  Republicans and Democrats have called on the administration to put those funds on hold again following the attack on Israel, claiming there's a risk the money could be used to help fund Hamas.  

Two—   It's not clear when there will be a floor vote to elect a new Speaker of the House.  The chamber went on recess yesterday after House Republicans in a closed-door meeting chose Majority Leader Steve Scalise as their party's nominee.  The Louisiana Republican still must win a majority vote from the full House to win the gavel and it's not clear if he has the votes at this time.  

 

 

 

Three -- The United Auto Workers strike is adding more members to the picket lines.  The union tweeted Wednesday that 87-hundred members at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant are joining the strike after they say Ford refused to make further movement in bargaining.  Union workers have been picketing against Ford, GM and Stellantis for over a month.

One — The White House is confirming at least 22 Americans were killed and 17 are missing following Hamas's attack on Israel.  National Security Council spokesman John Kirby those numbers could rise, and a number of Americans are also being held hostage by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.  Kirby said the administration is doing it all it can to try and locate missing Americans.  

Two—  Congressman Shri Thanedar of Detroit has quit the Democratic Socialists of America due to the DSA not condemning Hamas for attacks on Israel. Thanedar says he can't associate with an organization unwilling to call out terrorism in all its forms. He added he stands with Israel and its right to defend itself.

 

 

 

Three -- A trip to Walt Disney World or Disneyland will now cost more.  On Wednesday, Disney announced price hikes for theme park tickets along with parking and its Genie-Plus service.  Prices for annual passes at Disney World in Florida are jumping between 30 and 50 dollars depending on the pass.

One — A former Hamas leader is calling for people in neighboring countries to join the Palestinian militant group's war against Israel.  Reuters reports it received a recorded statement from the former Hamas chief that called for protests across the Muslim world on Friday.  He urged the governments of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt to support Palestinians.  

Two—  Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin of Lansing is urging the Biden administration to pause its plan to release as much as six-billion dollars in humanitarian aid to Iran. She says that is due to Iran's support of Hamas, which attacked Israel over the weekend killing roughly 12-hundred people. Slotkin says any further involvement with Iran needs to be paused.

 

 

 

Three -- The United Auto Workers strike is expanding.  The organization said in a tweet that 87-hundred UAW members at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant are joining the strike after Ford "refused to make further movement in bargaining."  Large F-Series pick-up trucks are made that the plant, which are one of the company's more profitable vehicles.

—Here are 3 big things you need to know—

 

One — U.S. officials are investigating whether some of the Hamas militants who carried out the shocking attack on Israel got advanced training from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday that Iran was complicit in the attack that was far more sophisticated than past Hamas operations.

Two—   More than 12-hundred Palestinian supporters gathered at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn to denounce Israel. Arab American News publisher Osama Siblani said Hamas is not a terrorist organization.  President Biden, Governor Whitmer, and U.S. Senator Gary Peters were booed by the crowd for their support of Israel. 

 

 

 

Three -- House Republicans are scheduled to vote on a new speaker today.  The closed-door vote will come after Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan of Ohio auditioned for the job on Tuesday.  Lawmakers still aren't sure Scalise or Jordan can come up with the votes needed to be elected Speaker.
