One — The Iranian-backed Houthis are claiming responsibility for attacks on three commercial ships in the Red Sea Sunday.  The USS Carney shot down several drones that officials say were launched from Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen, just a month after it shot down rockets and drones fired by Houthi militants.  U.S. Central Command said that the attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security.

 

 

Two—  The strike at the MGM Grand Detroit Casino is over after 47-days.  The union has ratified the contract with the casino after they voted down a tentative deal last month.  The Detroit Casino Council says it includes an immediate 18-percent pay raise on average and has the largest-ever wage increases. 

 

 

And number three — A leading national health expert says the U.S. should experience a more typical flu and virus season this winter.  Speaking on CBS' Face the Nation, former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb says the level of RSV and flu cases is abating, compared to epidemic numbers in past years.  He added the number of COVID cases are down from past years.

—Here are 3 big things you need to know—

 

One —  The truce is over between Israel and Hamas.  The Israeli military announced today that it has resumed combat in the Gaza Strip, after Hamas violated the truce and fired a rocket toward Israeli territory.  During the seven-day truce, Hamas released 80 hostages in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners.  

 

Two—   Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed 23 bills into law that expand voting rights in the state, including allowing 16 and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote so they are in the system when they turn 18. The new laws also address misinformation and artificial intelligence.  

 

And number three — A U.S. judge is blocking Montana's TikTok ban from going into effect.  A preliminary injunction was issued Thursday that would block the ban from taking effect on January 1st, claiming that it "oversteps state power and infringes on the constitutional rights of users."  TikTok users in Montana had filed a lawsuit to block the ban.

One —  Israel and Hamas have ended their seven-day truce.  The Israeli military said Friday that it has resumed combat in the Gaza Strip, and claims Hamas violated the truce when it fired a rocket toward Israeli territory.  Israeli airstrikes have been reported in Gaza City, and drones have been reported over southern Gaza.

 

 

Two—   A new rule from the EPA would require utilities to replace lead drinking water pipes within ten years.  The new lead and copper proposal would require utilities to replace the lines regardless of the lead levels registered in water samples.  The EPA is aiming to have a final version of the rule by next fall.

 

 

And number three — Congress is debating whether to expel New York Republican George Santos.  The House is expected to vote on it today, making it the third time this year the House has considered ousting Santos.  This comes after a House Ethics Committee found evidence Santos violated federal law by misusing campaign funds.

One — The truce between Israel and Hamas is being extended for another day.  The Israeli military says the temporary ceasefire in Gaza will continue for another day for the process of releasing hostages.  The six-day truce was set to end at 7am local time, following the release of 16 Hamas captives in exchange for 30 Palestinian prisoners being held by Israel.  

 

 

Two—   The latest Auto Reliability study from Consumer Reports finds Detroit's automakers did not perform well.  Buick was the best performing domestic brand coming in at number 12 in the report. General Motors Cadillac division placed 16th with Chevrolet at 20 and GMC in the 24th spot. Ford came in 22nd and Lincoln placed 23rd. The Ram Truck division of Stellantis was 15th with Jeep at number 26 and Chrysler was 30th. 

 

 

Three -- Legendary diplomat Henry Kissinger is dead at the age of 100.  Kissinger served as National Security Advisor to the Nixon administration from 1969 to 1975, and was best known for guiding American foreign policy during the Vietnam War.  He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 after negotiating a ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Vietnam.

One — President Biden says an American-Israeli dual national citizen released from Gaza on Wednesday is "safe."  Biden told reporters as he was boarding Air Force One to head home from Colorado that she was safe in Egypt, and that he spoke with her mother and father.

 

 

 

Two—   The United Auto Workers union says it is working to organize 150-thousand workers of 13 non-union automakers. The UAW says those include BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Tesla, and more. The union says thousands of workers have started campaigns to join, with one of the largest being at Toyota's Georgetown, Kentucky assembly plant .

 

 

Three -- It's red versus blue when Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom go head-to-head during their televised showdown Thursday.  The 90-minute special will be a chance for each governor to present their radically different ideologies to a national audience.

Two—  The 46-day strike by the United Auto Workers Union cost General Motors an estimated one-point-one billion dollars.  The company announced this morning their adjusted operating profit for the year will be 11-point seven to 12-point seven billion dollars.  

 

 

Three -- Suicide deaths are at a record high. According to CDC data, more people died by suicide in 2022 than any other year on record since at least 1941.  While the newest data shows improvement in rates among children and teens, rates for all other age groups went up.  Nearly 50-thousand lives total were lost due to suicide in 2022.
