—Here are 3 big things you need to know—

 

One —  The House is set to vote on a government spending package today to avoid a government shutdown.  House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters he expects a substantial majority of Democrats to vote in favor of the bill.  Most Republicans are expected to back the legislation as well.

 

Two—  Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is urging the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati to return the lawsuit over Enbridge Energy's Line 5 oil pipeline to state court from federal court.  She made her case yesterday in Ohio, and says the 70-year-old pipeline needs to be shut down. Nessel says the pipeline is a public nuisance, and violates the Michigan Environmental Protection Act. 

And number three — The head of the Social Security Administration is warning against raising the retirement age.  Martin O'Malley spoke at a House committee hearing on Thursday where he said Americans want their government to strengthen Social Security and expand it, not to cut it, contract it, or gut its customer service.

One — The House is set to vote on a government spending package today to avoid a partial government shutdown.  House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries says he expects a substantial majority of Democrats to vote in favor of the bill.  Most Republicans are expected to back the legislation as well, despite a group of conservative members who want to roll back spending.  

 

Two—   Much of west Michigan is under a winter weather advisory today with three-to-seven inches of snow in the forecast.  Grand Rapids is in the area that is projected to get the seven-inches, while Kalamazoo north of Interstate 94 can expect to see an inch to three inches.  

 

 

And number three — One of the last remaining survivors of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor has died.  Richard C. Higgins died of natural causes Tuesday in Bend, Oregon, according to his granddaughter.  He was 102.
