Here are 3 big things you need to know—

 

One — Vice President Kamala Harris spent part of her Labor Day campaigning in Detroit.  It was her fourth trip to Michigan this year and her second since becoming the Democratic nominee for President.  She said the nation celebrates unions and should be thanked for a five-day work week, sick leave, paid leave, and vacation time. 

Two ----  Possession of hard drugs is once again a crime in Oregon as the state's decriminalization experiment officially ended Sunday.  Portland police say people caught with hard drugs will be handcuffed while officers check for any outstanding warrants.  If none are found, the person may be offered deflection, which is the option of treatment over jail time. 

 

 

And number three — President Biden says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu isn't doing enough to a secure hostage deal with Hamas.  Speaking to reporters at the White House, Biden said he remains hopeful that a deal will get done.  The President said he spoke to the parents of an Israeli-American hostage that was found dead over the weekend.

Here are 3 big things you need to know—

 

One — Hundreds of anti-Israel demonstrators set off smoke bombs at a protest in New York City this afternoon. They assembled at Union Square and began marching toward Grand Central Terminal.  The protesters demanded a ceasefire in the Israel/Hamas war in Gazas.

Two ----  One person is in custody after four sleeping passengers were shot and killed on a Chicago-area train.  Authorities say three of the victims died at the scene, while the fourth was pronounced dead at the hospital.  Chicago Police were able to locate the suspect on a different train and said a firearm was recovered.  The case remains under investigation.

And number three — San Francisco 49ers rookie wideout Ricky Pearsall will miss at least the first four games of the NFL season as he recovers from a gunshot wound.  The 23-year-old was released from the hospital on Sunday after he was shot in the chest over the weekend during a robbery attempt.  The 49ers placed him on the non-football injury list.

Here are 3 big things you need to know—

 

One — Former President Donald Trump is promising that he will require health insurance companies or the government to cover in-vitro fertilization costs.  Speaking in Michigan yesterday, Trump said his campaign is "pro-family," adding that parents would be able to deduct major newborn expenses from their taxes if he's elected.

 

Two ----  President Joe Biden will visit Michigan next Friday.  Where he will be speaking has not been announced.  The White House says Biden will be discussing his "Investing in America" agenda.  This will be his fourth visit to the state this year after previously visiting Saginaw once and the Detroit area twice. 

 

 

And number three — A new Labor Day survey reveals seventy-four-percent of people think that inflation is erasing their hard work.  According to Wallet Hub, two-in-three Americans say that inflation is affecting their Labor Day plans.  Sixty-seven percent of people surveyed believe they're working harder this year than last year; while 93-percent of people want a raise to keep up with inflation.

Here are 3 big things you need to know—

 

One — Vice President Harris is finishing off her bus tour by calling for voters in Georgia to head to the polls.  Speaking in Savannah on Thursday, Harris said she is hoping for a repeat of 2020, when Georgians put another Democrat in the White House.  It marked the end of a two-day bus tour for Harris and running mate Tim Walz in the state.

 

Two ----  Starting September 30th, retailers will need to check photo ID of anyone appearing under the age of 30 who tries to buy tobacco products.  The FDA announced the final rule Thursday that follows legislation signed in 2019 that raised the federal minimum age of sale of tobacco products from 18 to 21. 

 

 

And number three — The annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk is set for Monday morning.  The bridge between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas will be closed to vehicles from 6:30 a.m. until noon.  The walk will start at 7 a.m. on both sides of the bridge and people can start their walk up to 11:30 a.m.
