Scot Bertram, The U.S. House is set to vote for a new speaker today
Friday Jan 03, 2025
Friday Jan 03, 2025
Here are 3 big things you need to know—
One — The Army veteran who drove a pickup truck into a crowd in New Orleans acted alone. That’s the latest update from the FBI, reversing a previous statement. The FBI also revealed that the driver, an American citizen from Texas, posted five videos on his Facebook account in the hours before the attack in which he proclaimed his support for ISIS and previewed his violent intent.
Two ---- Michigan's minimum wage is now up to ten-dollars-56-cents an hour. The wage will rise again to 12-dollars-48-cents on February 21st. Tipped workers minimum wage is up eight-cents an hour to four-dollars-one-cent and will go up to five-99 in February if the current law is unchanged. Republicans in the state House say they will push to protect the lower tipped wage when they get to work next week.
And number three — The U.S. House is set to vote for a new speaker today. It comes as some Republicans believe current Speaker Mike Johnson could struggle to find the votes needed to remain in the role. Johnson does have the full support of President-elect Trump.

Scot Bertram, The 119th U.S. Congress will be sworn in today
Friday Jan 03, 2025
Friday Jan 03, 2025
Here are 3 big things you need to know—
One — The FBI says, as far as they've seen, there is no link so far between the deadly terror attack in New Orleans and the Tesla cyber-truck explosion outside Trump hotel in Las Vegas. The Vegas explosion was being looked at as a potential act of terrorism -- with an Army vet from Colorado dead and several others hurt. The suspect in the Bourbon Street attack was identified as a U.S.-born citizen and also an Army veteran. Both served on the same base, both used electric vehicles, both rented via the same app. I’m sorry, but right now the similarities are too strong to think nothing linked the two.
Two ---- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says broccoli sold in Michigan and 19 other states is being recalled. The produce was sold at Walmart and is washed and ready-to-eat 12-ounce bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets. Listeria contamination is the reason for the recall. The product is past its "best if used by" date and no longer in stores.
And number three — The 119th U.S. Congress will be sworn in today. The new two-year term will get underway after the House members are sworn in. First, they'll have to elect a speaker, and it's not clear if Republican Mike Johnson has the votes needed to retain the position. For the first time in five years, the GOP controls both the House and the Senate, but Republicans hold just a slim majority in the House.

Here are 3 big things you need to know—
One — At least 15 people are dead and dozens injured after that deadly terrorist attack in New Orleans. Police sources have identified the driver as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar of Texas. Sources say there was an ISIS flag inside Jabbar's vehicle during the attack.
Two ---- During Wednesday night remarks, President Biden revealed that Din Jabbar allegedly posted violent social media videos hours before the Bourbon Street attack. An Army spokesperson telling Fox News that Jabbar served in the U.S. Army from 2007 to 2020. Reports also indicate Din Jabbar had recently converted to Islam.
And number three — Meanwhile in Las Vegas, one person is dead and seven others were injured when a Tesla Cybertruck exploded in front of Trump International Hotel Las Vegas on Wednesday morning. That also is being investigated as a terror attack …. no indication if the two events are related in some way. What a way to start 2025.

Here are 3 big things you need to know—
One — President-elect Trump says New Orleans has his full support after at least fifteen people were killed and dozens were injured in a terror attack. Trump said his heart is with all of the victims and their loved ones. The suspect has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, who was a U.S-born citizen from Texas. An ISIS flag was found on the trailer hitch of the pickup truck that he used.
Two ---- Officials in New Orleans say security barriers that would have protected crowds on Bourbon Street had been removed before Wednesday's attack. The barriers, called bollards, were removed because they had been malfunctioning. The city’s mayor says the bollards were being replaced ahead of the city hosting the Super Bowl in February.
And number three — The explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas also is being investigated as a possible terrorist attack. One person inside the Cybertruck was killed and at least seven others near the vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Here are 3 big things you need to know—
One — The driver who died when a Cybertruck blew up outside the Trump Las Vegas hotel has been identified as an Army vet from Colorado. Law enforcement sources tell the New York Post that 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger rented the electric truck that exploded on New Year's Day, and was in the driver's seat when it blew up.
Two ---- President Biden says that the man who drove through a crowded Bourbon Street in New Orleans had posted videos on social media claiming to be inspired by ISIS. Biden gave remarks Wednesday night at Camp David on what he called the despicable attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans that has left at least 15 people and injured dozens more.
And number three — President-elect Trump will reportedly hold a "victory rally" on the day before his inauguration … January 19th at Capital One Arena. The rally will also include featured speakers, though a list of speakers was not provided. The rally will be Trump's first speech in Washington, DC since January 6th, 2021.
